Leak-Testing Glossary

Plain-language definitions for production leak-testing, fixtures, measurement and dispensing terms.

Definitions provide orientation, not application acceptance criteria. Read the linked method material and validate the complete production system with the responsible quality and engineering teams.

Definitions

A
accumulation
A trace-gas approach that measures gas collected in a defined space over time. Accumulation leak test.
B
burst test
A test that increases pressure until a defined opening or failure condition is observed. Burst pressure leak test.
C
cc/min
Cubic centimeters per minute, a volumetric-flow expression whose conditions should be stated. Leak rate calculator & converter.
CCI
Container-closure integrity: the ability of a package closure system to maintain its intended barrier. Leak testing standards.
chamber / volumetric test
A test arrangement that encloses a part when direct internal access is unavailable. Chamber leak test.
continuous dispensing
Dispensing fluid as an ongoing flow rather than discrete shots. Dispensing applications.
CV (coefficient of variation)
A normalized measure of spread, commonly expressed as standard deviation divided by mean. Compare metering pumps.
D
differential pressure decay
A pressure-decay approach comparing a test volume with a reference volume. Differential pressure decay.
E
EtherNet/IP
An industrial Ethernet network term; confirm any product interface requirements with Zaxis. PLC & automation integration.
F
false failure
A failed result caused by the station or process rather than the product condition. Fixture design guide.
fill time
The programmed interval used to bring a test volume to the selected pressure. Pressure decay buyer's guide.
fixture
The tooling that locates, seals and connects a part for repeatable testing. Fixture design guide.
G
gauge R&R
A measurement-system study used to assess repeatability and reproducibility. Pressure decay buyer's guide.
H
helium leak test
A trace-gas test that detects helium escaping from a test boundary. Z-Charge & Z-Ion helium system.
hydrogen forming gas
A hydrogen-containing tracer-gas mixture used in appropriate detection applications. Trace gas leak testing.
I
internal / test volume
The connected gas volume of the part, adapters, hoses and fixture during a test. Fixture design guide.
IP67/IP68
Ingress-protection designations whose applicability is determined by the relevant IEC test context. IP67 / IP68 leak testing.
L
leak rate
The amount of gas escaping over time under stated conditions. What is a leak test?.
leak standard / calibrated leak / master leak
A controlled reference leak used to check or compare a measurement system. Leak standards.
M
mass flow leak test
A method that measures gas flow through a part or path. Mass flow leak test.
mbar·L/s
A pressure-volume-per-time leak-rate unit. Leak rate calculator & converter.
N
NEMA enclosure
An enclosure classification reference; review the applicable designation for the installation. Z8N NEMA air leak tester.
O
occlusion test
A test for restriction or blockage in a tube or flow path. Occlusion leak test.
OPC UA
An open industrial interoperability standard for exchanging machine, instrument and quality data between controllers and software; the Zaxis Z8 lists OPC UA among its communication options. PLC & automation integration.
P
Pa·m³/s
A SI pressure-volume-per-time leak-rate unit. Leak rate calculator & converter.
PLC I/O
Signals used between a programmable logic controller and production equipment. PLC & automation integration.
positive displacement
A pumping principle that moves a defined volume by mechanical displacement. Precision metering pumps.
pressure decay
A test that pressurizes a sealed volume, isolates the source and measures pressure change over time. Pressure decay leak test.
R
repeatability vs accuracy
Repeatability is result consistency; accuracy is closeness to a reference value. Compare air leak testers.
resolution
The smallest change an instrument can distinguish under stated conditions. Compare air leak testers.
S
shot dispensing
Dispensing a defined discrete amount in an individual cycle. Dispensing applications.
sniffing
A trace-gas technique that samples around accessible areas to locate escaping gas. Sniff leak test.
stabilization / settle time
Time after fill or evacuation that allows the part and gas condition to settle before measurement. Pressure decay buyer's guide.
standard cubic centimeters per minute
A gas-flow or leak-rate unit stated at defined standard conditions. Leak rate calculator & converter.
T
test time
The programmed interval during which the measurement decision is made. Pressure decay buyer's guide.
trace gas
An identifiable gas used by a dedicated detection method. Trace gas leak testing.
V
vacuum decay
A test that applies vacuum and observes pressure change during the measurement interval. Vacuum decay leak test.
valveless metering pump
A positive-displacement pump architecture that meters fluid without conventional check valves. Precision metering pumps.
